Whiz Kid: Nick Landgraf Among Top Student-Athletes in Michigan

The Berkley High School senior stands to win a $1,000 scholarship for his successful balancing act in and out of the classroom.

Nick Landgraf

  • Age: 18
  • School: Berkley High School, senior class
  • Accomplishment: Landgraf is among the 120 finalists for the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s Scholar-Athlete Award for the 2010-11 school year. Overall, the winners will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship that is scheduled to be announced Tuesday. Landgraf is looking to be one of the six male winners representing Class A or one of two at-large honorees to receive a scholarship. Landgraf – who played soccer in the fall and is a co-captain for the hockey team this winter – was named a finalist among the 1,901 applications submitted to the MHSAA. To be eligible for the award, students must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50 and have won a varsity letter in at least one sport. In the classroom, Landgraf ranks fourth overall in the senior class of 314. On the ice, he leads the Bears with 20 points (seven goals and 13 assists).
  • Key to awesomeness: The very humble Landgraf was thrilled to be named a finalist. “I really appreciate being chosen as a finalist out of all the people who could have been chosen,” he said. “It really means a lot to me and it’s a great honor.” Landgraf has been able to successfully balance academics and athletics for the following reasons: “I work very hard at what I do and I always try my best. …Really, I just want to succeed and be successful and that’s what drives me to do that.”
