“It was very nice to have these two closely matched-up teams facing each other at the end (of the season) for us,” Hurricanes co-head coach Sean Peters said. “I was really pleased on how both teams performed. I thought our team was very strong throughout and Pleasant Ridge had some very strong swimmers.”

Emmeline Dunckel (11-and 12-year-olds, 50-meter butterfly; 33:64) and Lauren Carey (11-and 12-year-olds, 100-meter individual medley; 1:16:16) helped their team improve to 3-2 on the season by setting new HWAC records.

It was the second time Dunckel has set the record in the 50 meter butterfly this season.

“Lauren Carey was exceptional, she broke an old IM record,” Peters said. “And Dunckel broke her own record, so that was nice to see.”

Five points separated the teams through the first 28 events (HWAC 154 to 149). The Hurricanes were able to pull away by winning seven straight after that.

HWAC had a 46-point lead going into the relay races, which were the final events of the evening. Pleasant Ridge won four of the six relays, but it wasn’t enough to help close the deficit.

Everyone from both teams was given free pizza after the meet and were invited to use the water slide at the pool.

The Hurricanes have one final regular season meet Thursday at the Beechview Swim Club in Farmington Hills before the playoffs at the end of the month. In the playoffs, the top two swimmers from each individual event compete against all the area teams.

“I think our team could do very well there,” Peters said. “You get teams from Farmington, Birmingham and south Oakland County like us here. All 13 teams meet in the league meet.”
