Berkley High School Boys Basketball Season Ends

Bears lose to Renaissance 62-52 in a Class A district semifinal game Wednesday.

Detroit Renaissance proved to have too many offensive threats for Berkley's basketball team.

Renaissance made a late run to beat  62-52 in a Class A boys basketball district semifinal game Wednesday at Southfield High School. The Bears end their season with a 13-9 record overall.

Senior Ryan Bush led the way for Berkley with 16 points. Senior Terrell Porter added 11 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks, but it still wasn’t enough for the Bears to keep their season alive.

“I’m disappointed, but I’m still proud of my guys,” Berkley first-year head coach Dave McGlown said. “We had a good season, they worked hard and fought until end of this game and they fought until the end of every game. I did not want it to end, but I’m proud of my guys.”

The contest was a back-and-forth match, but Renaissance made a run at the end to down the Bears.

Despite being eliminated from the playoffs after just one victory, Berkley doubled its win total from last season.

“It was a good season,” McGlown said. “We made a lot of improvement with a lot of the same guys. Improvement is what we wanted to do. We wanted to get better. We accomplished a lot of things we set out to do this year.”

Berkley will graduate seven seniors from the 2010-11 squad. Bush and co-captain Justin Peguese are expected to play basketball in college, but have not yet committed with any teams. Porter has committed to continuing his athletics career in college, but he will be playing football. Porter is headed to Iowa Central Community College in the fall.

“We just wanted to get better every day and the kids all did that,” McGlown said. “They worked hard in practice and performed in games. That’s all I wanted them to do.”
