Social studies teacher and scholarship board member Angie Church said there were many amazing students honored during the Honors Convocation, so Shannon and Kieffer were among good company during the event. The scholarship winners "are remarkable young people," she said, and "have been ideal Berkley Bears!"

Shannon's Keys to Awesomeness

Shannon, she said, was honored for balancing her high school career, academics, athletics and community involvement. Her accomplishments include church activity, participation in three varsity sports, the knitting club, Interact and Students Against Destructive Decisions. She maintained honor roll grades. Shannon was involved in the LINK program, which pairs students with students who have special needs. "She is extremely patient and kind," Church said. "She is a conscientious student who interacts with all sorts of students. She can mix with any peer group and is highly respected by her teachers." Shannon plans to attend Marygrove College in Detroit.

Kieffer's Keys to Awesomeness

Kieffer is a Senior Patrol Boy Scout leader who leads a Boy Scout Troop of 60 young men weekly, Church said. He also was a member of the varsity cross county and track and field teams, has participated in Teen Court, Mock Trial and Student Leadership. Church said: "When asked about his convictions and commitments, he replied, 'Do your best in everything you do. Stand up for those who cannot, love those who persecute you. Forgive and forget and never give up.' " Church said Kieffer "is an amazing young man who has overcome a lot of challenges." He plans to attend Oakland University or Norwich College.
