Weekend Planner: 'Titanic' Musical, High School Performances Hit Local Stages

Berkley High School offers dark comedy, 'Titanic' comes to Royal Oak stage and Huntington Woods library hosts a used book sale this weekend.

When you're making plans for this weekend, there are two great local performances and a book sale not to miss.

'Arsenic and Lace'

The  drama program will presents the 1940s Arsenic and Old Lace this weekend.

The classic dark comedy centers around two elderly sisters who live together. They are a well-off family with three nephews: Mortimer, a drama critic; Teddy, who thinks he is Teddy Roosevelt; and Jonathan, a criminal who has had his face changed three times (currently looking like Boris Karloff).

From the outside they look like a semi-normal family and are even known for their charity work. But the secret that’s not known is their affinity for poisoning lonely, old gentlemen with elderberry wine spiced with "one teaspoon of arsenic, a half teaspoon of strychnine, and a pinch of cyanide."

The show starts at 7 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday at Berkley High School. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors, and can be purchased 30 minutes before curtain.

Berkley actor in 'Waiting for Godot '

will be presented by  Guild of Cranbrook, beginning this weekend. Performances start at 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday and April 20-21. The show features several local actors performing in an intimate setting.

Vladimir (Scott MacDonald of Berkley) and Estragon (Paul Dorset of Birmingham) are two lovable vagabonds, waiting near a tree on a barren stretch of road, inhabiting a drama spun from their own consciousness. They comfort and irritate each other all day, every day, as they blather endlessly.

This comical wordplay of poetry, dreamscapes and nonsense has been interpreted as a somber summation of mankind’s inexhaustible search for meaning.

Tickets cost $12 for general admission and reservations can be made by calling 248-737-3587.
