Viewfinder: School Back in Session for Berkley Students

Nervous parents and excited children settle in for the first day of classes.

Some were emotional, some were nervous and some were all-out excited.

Tuesday morning marked the first day of class for children in the Berkley School District, with many parents lining the sidewalks and giving last-minute hugs before the ring of the first bell.

At , this cool and crisp morning was the first day that friends Lori Serlin and Marjie Field sent their children, Hailey and Logan, off to kindergarten together to Ms. Posey’s class.

“It’s definitely an out-of-body experience,” Serlin said. “I’m just excited. This is the start of their first formal schooling. It’s just a whole new environment.”

Other parents like Annette Giddons admitted they were fighting back tears.

“It was so rushed and everyone was so excited this morning, although last night I cried,” said Giddons, whose son Jude is entering kindergarten. “But, he’s very positive about school. He’s so ready for it.”

Many parents of children entering older grades said their young ones were already used to the routine.

“My daughter, Mira, was excited; she’s a strong child,” Alycia Schoof said. “I was probably more nervous.”

After school let out for the half day, many students rushed back into the arms of their parents, with papers, checklists and even some homework already in hand.

Regular full-day school hours begin Wednesday.
