Tag Days to Give Instrumental Programs a Boost

Berkley School District students will solicit donations this weekend outside local businesses to help fund uniforms, workshops, transportation and scholarships.

The annual Tag Days fundraiser for instrumental programs will kick off this afternoon and run through Sunday evening.

Students in grades six through 12 will be stationed outside 39 businesses in Berkley, Huntington Woods, Oak Park, Royal Oak, Beverly Hills and Southfield (see below for complete list) during the weekend to solicit donations from community members. In exchange, donors will receive a tag that lists all of the 15 free concerts that will be held during the school year.

The first upcoming concert will be a Halloween show put on by the , and orchestras at 7 p.m. Oct. 25 at Berkley High School, said Berkley Instrumental Booster Chris Germaine, who co-chairs Tag Days with Cath Matthews-Pennanen.

"It is a well-attended concert," Germaine said. "The kids dress in costume and play creepy music like 'Thriller.' They have so much fun."

The Tag Days donations will be used to help fund uniforms, music workshops and lessons, transportation for concerts and trips and scholarships for music lessons or summer camp, for the more than 600 students in Berkley  instrumental programs, Germaine said.

Students who participate during Tag Days and in the Berkley Instrumental Boosters' Fruit & Nuts sale in November may audition for $150 scholarships to help fund lessons, camp or instrumental rental fees, she said.

"We need your support," Germaine said of Tag Days. "If you've got a couple coins, drop 'em in. If you've got a dollar, drop it in."

The Berkley Instrumental Boosters meet the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the band room at Berkley High School.
