Ryan Hurley Selected for Prestigious Internship with Rackham Symphony Choir

The Berkley High School sophomore will be performing with the Rackham Symphony Choir in "Too Hot To Handel," a jazz-gospel version of Handel's Messiah, at the Detroit Opera House on Saturday, Dec. 21.

Ryan Hurley, a sophomore at Berkley High School, has been named one of three interns for the the Rackham Symphony Choir's 64th season. 

Every year, the Rackham Symphony Choir (RSC) chooses talented southeast Michigan high school performers for its prestigious internship program.

In addition to mentoring from RSC members and full membership in the choir, interns receive a scholarship to fund private vocal instruction, training from Maestro Suzanne Mallare Acton – RSC’s Artistic Director and Assistant Music Director and Chorus Master of the Michigan Opera Theatre, participation in Master classes with professional artists, a featured soloist performance during a spring concert, and experience singing diverse, large-scale choral works at a variety of venues, including the Detroit Opera House.

Hurley has been a member of the Michigan Opera Theatre Children’s Chorus, the Royal Oak Children’s Choir, and the Michigan Youth Ensembles Chamber Singers at the University of Michigan. He participates in the Huntington Woods Teen Council and the International Thespian Society – Berkley High School Troupe. 

He has been in many theatre productions, both professional and non-professional; these include: LaBohemeToscaCarmenCarmina Burana, I PagliacciH.M.S. Pinafore,Bye Bye BirdieGuys & Dolls, and most recently Seussical, Jr., as the Cat in the Hat.

Hurley will be performing with RSC at the Detroit Opera House on Saturday, Dec. 21 in Too Hot To Handel, a jazz-gospel version of Handel’s Messiah featuring an all-star ensemble of Detroit jazz musicians and nationally acclaimed soloists, as well as members of the Too Hot To Handel Orchestra. 

Local K-12 school and college groups are invited to attend a special Too Hot To Handeldress rehearsal on Thursday, Dec. 19 sponsored by the DTE Energy Foundation.
