Preview: Board of Education Meeting

A partnership with St. Frances Cabrini in Allen Park that could bring $536,000 into the Berkley School District is up for consideration Monday night.

The Board of Education meets Monday at the Avery Center in Oak Park following a 7 p.m. study session.

The board will tackle a number of administrative and staffing issues, including whether to form a partnership with St. Frances Cabrini in Allen Park during the 2012-13, 2013-2014 and 2014-15 school years.

SFC is a nonpublic school that serves 1,100 students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. The State School Aid Act allows public districts to approach parochial schools in counties bordering Oakland County about forming partnerships.

The agreement states that the Berkley School District "will provide instruction for pupils enrolled at Cabrini Schools in the non-essential elective courses of art, foreign language, music, physical education, Advanced Placement courses and any other courses deemed eligible."

The SFC students would be considered part-time enrollees in the Berkley School District under the agreement.

If the partnership is approved, nine SFC staff members would join the Berkley School District, according to BSD Deputy Superintendent of Finance, Facilities and Operations Larry Gallagher.

The Berkley School District would pay the teachers their current salaries, as well as medical and dental benefits, but not vision, life insurance or long-term disability.

"SFC will see cost relief of over $300k and the Berkley School District will realize net revenue of an estimated $536k, assuming 100% blended count and pending final student enrollment and salary/benefit costs (see attached PDF)," he wrote in a letter to the Board of Education. "... Berkley Schools will receive the foundation allowance for an estimated 128 fte’s (full-time equivalents) which represent the portion of the school year these students will be receiving instruction while attending eligible shared time courses."
