Preview: Board of Education Meeting

Back-to-school issues including lunch prices, rest room repairs, the 2011-2012 district master calendar and more will be on the agenda Monday night.

The Board of Education will hold a study session at 7 Monday night at the Avery Center in Oak Park, immediately followed by a regular meeting.

During its study session, the board will consider several back-to-school related topics, including:

  • Whether to hire D&S Contractors, Inc. to renovate two boys rest rooms at for $29,513. The project would involve fixing leaky plumbing and making the facilities comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Whether to approve 2011-12 lunch prices of $2.30 for elementary and $2.55 for secondary lunch, an increase of $0.05 per meal, in response to the United States Department of Agriculture Equity in School Lunch Pricing Act.
  • Whether to spend $23,218 to buy new mathematics materials for kindergarten through eighth-grade special education resource room teachers.
  • Whether to appoint Jeff Spakowski and Kari Demming, in a shared role, and Michelle Duffy as Oakland Schools Parent Advisory Council representatives.
  • Whether to approve the 2011-2012 district master calendar, which will include school start and end dates, vacations, non-attendance days, parent-teacher conferences, professional development days and meetings and the marking periods with records days. 

During its regular meeting, the board will vote on these items and receive legislative, committee, conference and Berkley Education Association reports.

Also during the study session, the board will receive a budget negotiations update and consider a tentative personnel list. Director of Curriculum, Technology, Assessment and Grants Mary Beth Fitzpatrick, along with  Dean Mindy Nathan, will discuss .

There will be opportunities for citizen comments during both the study session and the regular Board of Education meeting.
