Berkley Students Perform Well on 2010 MEAP Tests

The Michigan Department of Education releases results from the fall 2010 exams.

Michigan Educational Assessment Program test results for fall 2010 released Thursday show a majority of students in the met or exceeded state expectations.

The tests track students' progress in math, reading, writing, science and social studies in third  through ninth grades. Different subjects were measured at each grade level.

"We are especially proud of the growth in the area of reading, which indicates the strength and effectiveness of our curriculum alignment, student interventions and supports in grades K-2, and the appropriateness and attention to our professional development for the staff members," Mary Beth Fitzpatrick, director of Curriculum, Technology, Assessment & Grants for the , wrote in an e-mail to Patch.

"We also have seen growth by our eighth grade math scores, which again, speaks to a consistent analysis and alignment of our core curriculum, resources, supports and professional development."

Math and reading scores improved statewide as well, a Michigan Department of Education press release noted Thursday.

"Our students need and deserve a high quality education and the best possible preparation more than ever in today's knowledge-based economy and world," Gov. Rick Snyder said in the press release. "Establishing rigorous standards and being accountable in part through performance assessments are critical beginnings in realizing a first-rate education for every student that will help drive Michigan's reinvention and economic transformation."
