The event surpassed organizers' expectations, generating at least $28,000 to fund school activities, Burton Fun Run chairwoman Valerie Valentine said. The PTA's goal was $25,000, she said, and the extra $3,000 will go toward the Burton Playground Endowment Fund.

Those figures did not include last-minute contributions that had yet to be tallied, she said.

Among the participants and spectators Friday were the approximately 475 students who attend the school, 60 parent volunteers, deejay (we told you there was a party atmosphere!) Gordy Oliva of Huntington Woods and guest runner Jef Mallett, also of Huntington Woods, the creator of nationally syndicated comic strip Frazz.

Proceeds from the 2011 Burton Fun Run were used to provide field trips, in-house speakers, books, technologies and more, the Burton Fun Run website says.
