Board of Education Appointee Hopes to Offer 'Fresh, Insightful Perspective'

Mitchell Moses, who was selected Tuesday night to fill a seat vacated by trustee Ryan O'Gorman, said he plans to run in the November general election.

The Board of Education appointed Mitchell Moses to fill a seat vacated by trustee Ryan O'Gorman during a special session Tuesday night at the Avery Center in Oak Park.

"I'm very excited about being on the school board and starting to help the district," Moses said Wednesday, adding that he hopes to bring a "fresh, insightful perspective" to the board.

. O'Gorman's family purchased a home outside the district, which disqualified him from serving as a trustee.

Moses will serve until Dec. 31 and has the option to run in this November's general election, which he said he plans to do.

"After extensive interviews with seven candidates and lengthy discussion by the current School Board, Mr. Moses was selected as the new School Board Trustee," Superintendent Michael Simeck wrote in a letter to the community Wednesday. "Mr. Moses is a business owner in Berkley. ... He has been active in the School District, has two children who graduated from , and has one student still in the District."

Moses, of Huntington Woods, owns , which designs, sews and installs custom window coverings. The business has been in operation for 26 years, the past four in Berkley, Moses said.

Prior to being a business owner, Moses said he worked as a certified public accountant.

"The economy has made it difficult in general (for school districts)," Moses said. "I want to help the Berkley school board in a positive financial way."

Moses was one of seven candidates who were considered for the position. The others, including two who withdrew, were:

  • Ryan Lawson
  • Christopher Capuano
  • Jennifer Andrews
  • Karen Murphy
  • Stephanie Harlan (withdrew)
  • James Ellis (withdrew)

“The Board is pleased to welcome Mitchell to the Board of Education for the balance of 2011," Simeck quoted Board President Marc Katz as saying in his letter Wednesday. "Mitchell brings a background of a small business owner, a financial background, having volunteered in the District and three children, two who have graduated and one at Berkley High School.”

Katz has said . Vice President Paul Ellison's term ends in 2011 as well.
