Back-to-School Essentials: Pencils

Despite more modern technologies, these old standbys are still a teacher's No. 1 request.

Ask a room full of teachers what is the one back-to-school supply students will need, and they will reply: a pencil.

Although this may sound obvious, teachers often find that students come to school without a writing utensil or that they go through pencils too quickly.

My son’s first-grade teacher gave me an excellent tip, which I still use today to solve the problem: When packing your student's lunch or sifting through their backpack, put a pencil in the bag, too. Even if your student is in high school, drop a pencil in their backpack daily. They will thank you for it.
