Back-to-School Essentials: Fashion Trendsetters
Get up to speed on dress guidelines prior to clothes shopping.

When shopping for back-to-school clothes, parents and students should remember that while the doesn’t require a uniform, it does have a dress code.
The dress code should guide your shopping selection, even if it doesn’t guide your student's shopping selection.

Elementary schools
- No tank tops for boys or girls.
- No bare midriffs.
- Skirts or shorts should be fingertip length with arms at sides.
- No baggy pants or shorts that reveal underwear.
- No flip-flops or unsecured sandals.
Middle school
Anderson Middle School Principal Vince Gigliotti said the number one problem is tank tops and too-short shorts and skirts. Although the administration sympathizes with hot weather, the main goal is to create an ideal learning environment with little distractions.
- No tank tops for boys or girls.
- No bare midriffs.
- Skirts or shorts should be fingertip length with arms at sides.
- No baggy pants or shorts that reveal underwear. Gigliotti commented that students would either be required to tighten their belts or if they do not have a belt, a rope would be given to the student to use as a belt.
High school
“Our main thing is that clothing not be a distraction from learning and that it be appropriate,” Berkley High School principal Randall Gawel said.

- No tight or revealing clothing
- All skirts and shorts should be fingertip length (at least)
- Pants worn at the waist (no "sagging")
- Tank tops should have straps that are at least two inches, no undergarments showing
- No hats
- No clothes that advertise alcohol, tobacco, drugs, etc.
