Anderson Middle School Restrooms to be Renovated

Leaky plumbing and poor ventilation will be fixed in two boys bathrooms that also will be made to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act.

OAK PARK — The Board of Education approved renovation work on two boys bathrooms at during its meeting this week at the Avery Center.

of Berkley was selected Monday to perform the work, which will cost $29,513 and be financed through the district's Sinking Fund.

The restrooms "have been in need of improvement for some time now," said Larry Gallagher, BSD deputy superintendent of finance, facilities and operations. He cited leaky plumbing and poor ventilation among the issues that need to be fixed.

The project will include a number of modifications to the restrooms, which are located near the media center on the first floor and directly above that space on the second floor, including:

  • A new layout that will bring the rooms in line with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Additional urinals; the bathrooms will have the same number of toilets.
  • Flush valves and motion sensors that will help the district save on water usage.

D&S Contractors was the second-lowest bidder but won the contract for a number of reasons, Gallagher said.

He said that Rod Fisher, BSD custodial and operations facilitator, found that the lowest bidder, Ronn Construction of Warren, had no experience in school work, needed significant lead time to get started, would have had to contract out part of the plumbing work and did not have a firm grasp on the water supply line capacity needed to install the urinals.

However, D&S Contractors "has impressive experience" with schools, including work at Oakland University, Huron Valley Schools, Wayne State University and Henry Ford Community College, Gallagher said.

"If all goes well, the project could be completed in the second or third week of September," he said.
