6 Teachers, Custodian to Retire from Berkley Schools

The district's incoming superintendent recognizes the staff members during Monday school board meeting.

Incoming Berkley School District Superintendent Dennis McDavid announced the retirement of six teachers and one custodian on Monday night at the last Board of Education meeting of the school year. Although their recognition was on the agenda, not one of the six retiring teachers could be at the event.

“They are sacrificing their moment of glory to do their work,” McDavid explained. “They are busy grading finals and other final projects. That’s the glory of a teacher’s life.”

David Andrus, a custodian and maintenance worker, was on hand to receive his recognition for his 21 years of service to the district.

“Some people don’t realize the connection between the janitors and maintenance workers and the kids,” McDavid said. “But they do play a large role because they are always in the school hallways and bathroom looking out for the students and watching over them.”

Prior to his 21 years working in the schools, Andrus spent 21 years in the U.S. Air Force.

“He is really a salt of the earth kind of guy,” McDavid said. “We will miss him.”
