You're Invited to Woodward Avenue Rapid Transit Alternatives Forum

The community is invited to participate in a Woodward Avenue rapid transit forum on April 25.

Huntington Woods City Commissioner Jeff Jenks and Berkley City Councilman Steve Baker will host the informational event that kicks off at 5:30 p.m. at the Berkley Community Center.

"The Woodward Avenue rapid transit forum is your time to learn more about the project, interact with public officials and transit experts, and share your ideas, questions, and feedback about our region's future!" says an invitation Jenks sent to community members.

The open house will focus on how the $2 million Woodward Avenue Rapid Transit Alternatives Analysis will impact Berkley, Huntington Woods, Pleasant Ridge and Royal Oak.

The Southeast Michigan Council of Governments project seeks to develop a transportation plan along 27 miles of Woodward Avenue from Detroit to Pontiac. The 11 communities involved are Detroit, Highland Park, Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, Huntington Woods, Royal Oak, Berkley, Birmingham, Bloomfield Township, Bloomfield Hills and Pontiac, along with the Michigan Suburbs Alliance and the Woodward Avenue Action Association.

A variety of options such as bus rapid transit and light rail have been considered as part of the study, according to SEMCOG.

"The Woodward corridor is the first of four corridors mentioned in (Gov. Rick Snyder's) recent proposal for a new regional transit authority and bus rapid transit system for a 113-mile regional transit network," according to Jenks' invitation. "The (Alternatives Analysis) phase will be completed in early 2014."
