What's Up With Those 13s on the Trees in Huntington Woods?

The neon-orange tags mark dead or dying trees that will be removed during 2013.

You may have noticed trees spray-painted with a neon orange "13" recently in Huntington Woods.

So, what's up with that?

"Those are trees that will be removed this next fiscal year, probably this summer or fall," Department of Public Works manager Claire Galed said, adding the "13" indicates the year – 2013 – in which they will be cut down.

She said many of the 50 or so trees are dead or dying silver maples.

Huntington Woods will spend approximately $27,000 to $28,000 from the city's major and local road funds on the project and will put the trees on a list for replacement when funds become available, Galed said.

"They'll be ground up," she said. "Most of it ends up becoming compost someplace. None of it will go into a landfill."
