What to Do If You Can’t Pay Your Property Taxes

You may qualify for a full or partial exemption under action taken by the Berkley City Council.

Economically strapped Berkley property owners who can’t pay their 2014 real estate taxes may get a reprieve as a result of action taken earlier this week by the Berkley City Council.

City officials will accept applications for a hardship exemption beginning Feb. 3, the Oakand Press reports.The program allows for both reductions and full exemptions.

Decisions will be made by the Board of Review after hearings in March.

The main criteria is family income, and decisions will be made based on federal poverty guidelines.

Applications will be available at the city treasurer’s office beginning Feb. 3 and hearings will begin in about a month.
