Voter Guide: Berkley, Huntington Woods Head to Polls for Primary Tuesday

Find out where to vote and what you'll need to bring for Tuesday's primary.

On Tuesday, residents of Berkley and Huntington Woods will get the opportunity to cast their votes in the presidential primary. 

Republican voters will have the chance to vote for which candidate should represent the party in the 2012 presidential elections.

Democrats also have the chance to vote, though President Barack Obama will be the only name on the Democratic ballot.

This primary will be conducted as a "closed" primary, which means voters must request a particular party's ballot at the polls. However, that does not mean voters have to be registered with a specific party affiliation; it just means that voters must indicate whether they want a Republican or Democratic ballot for this primary only. This rule doesn't apply to the November election. This stipulation is part of Public Act 163 (2011).

Below is a list of precincts in Berkley and Huntington Woods. If you're not sure where to go to cast your vote, visit the Michigan Votes website or contact the appropriate City Clerk's Office at 248-658-3310 (Berkley) or 248-541-4300 (Huntington Woods).

Voters are required by law to show valid photo ID at the polls; a state driver's license or state-issued ID will suffice.

Absentee Voting

If you are unable to vote without assistance, are 60 or older, expect to be absent or unable to vote Tuesday for any other reason, you may apply for an absentee ballot. Here's what you need to know:

  • You may apply for an absentee ballot at the City Clerk's Office in person (8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays); by mail (3338 Coolidge, Berkley, MI 48072); by fax (248-658-3301); or request a ballot by phone (248-658-3310).
  • The clerk's office will also be open 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday to issue and accept absentee ballots.
  • Absentee ballots will be issued until 4 p.m. Monday.
  • All ballots must be returned to the clerk's office by 8 p.m. Tuesday. If you're curious, track your absentee ballot with the Oakland County Absentee Ballot Tracker.

According to the Berkley City Clerk's office, 719 absentee ballots were sent out as of Wednesday, and 535 (roughly 75 percent) had been returned. In Huntington Woods, roughly 70 percent, or 322 of the 459 absentee ballots that were mailed out have already been returned, according to the clerk's office.

Polls will be open 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday. Here's a look at Berkley's precincts:
