State Rep. Ellen Cogen Lipton Wins Primary Race

State Rep. Ellen Cogen Lipton cruised to a primary election victory Tuesday over Democrat challenger Andrew Robert Cissell of Ferndale to serve the 27th District.

Cogen Lipton received approximately 83 percent of the vote, with 9,470 ballots cast in her favor, according to the Oakland County Clerk's website. The district includes Berkley, Ferndale, Hazel Park, Huntington Woods and Oak Park.

Cissell received approximately 16 percent of the vote, with 1,848 ballots cast in his favor. The remaining votes were for write-in candidates.

During an election party at fellow Huntington Woods resident Helaine Zack's home earlier in the night, Cogen Lipton said she was "running for a third and final term."

"I was really surprised I had a primary," Cogen Lipton said. "I feel pretty good, but it's always nerve-wracking when you have a primary."

Republican candidate Ezra Drissman of Oak Park ran unopposed in the primary and will face Cogen Lipton in the November general election.

The incumbent said that, should she win another term, she would focus on "a package of bills that will create incentives to put (home) energy efficiency front and center," as well as a juvenile competency standards package and campaign finance reform.

These results are unofficial until confirmed by the Oakland County clerk.
