Preview: Berkley City Council Meeting

Mayor-elect Phil O'Dwyer and council members Alan Kideckel, Eileen Steadman and Dan Terbrack will be sworn in; a mutual aid agreement between the Berkley Public Safety Department and the Highland Park Fire Department to be considered; and more.

The Berkley City Council will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at for an action-packed session.

The 33rd council will meet to swear in new mayor Phil O'Dwyer and recently elected council members Alan Kideckel, Eileen Steadman and Dan Terbrack. Adjournment and a brief reception will follow.

When the 34th council convenes, outgoing Mayor Marilyn Stephan and Councilman Daniel Benton will be recognized for their service before the body digs into the agenda, which includes the following items.

  • The second reading of an amendment to the portion of city code that covers vacant and neglected properties.
  • A presentation by Detroit City Council President Pro-Tem Gary Brown on regional cooperation.
  • A visit by Superintendent Michael Simeck, who will discuss personal property tax and other issues facing local schools.
  • Appointment of a council member to serve as mayor pro-tem through November 2013.
  • A resolution related to Municipal Employee Retirement System employees.
  • Accepting the audited 2010-2011 annual financial report.
  • Approving a mutual aid agreement between the and the Highland Park Fire Department. 
  • Addressing a rezoning request for 1722 Eleven Mile Road, on the north side between Mortenson and Cass, from Single Family Residential District to Office District.
  • Discussing the selection process for the council seat left vacant by Phil O'Dwyer's election as mayor.

The meeting is open to the public and there will be opportunities for citizen comments.
