Peters To Run for 14th District Congressional Seat

The congressman currently represents Berkley in the 9th District.

Congressman Gary Peters (D-9th Congressional) announced Thursday that he plans to run in the newly drawn 14th Congressional District.

Peters, who currently represents Berkley and a number of other communities, said about half of the new 14th District is in Oakland County. It does not include Berkley or Huntington Woods, which would be in the 9th District. The proposed district maps have yet to be finalized.

“The creation of this new Congressional District bridges diverse communities and comes at a pivotal time in our nation's history,” Peters said in a prepared statement Thursday.

“Too many families are struggling in our area and I am committed to the urgent task of bringing our communities together while fighting for the issues that unite us; good paying jobs, stronger schools, and protecting critical priorities like Social Security and Medicare,” he said.

If Peters had chosen to run in the redrawn 9th District, he likely would have squared off against veteran lawmaker and Royal Oak resident Sander Levin, (D-12th Congressional).
