Need to Know: 12 Mile-Coolidge Construction Project

Find all the information here, including a timeline, important contacts and the project scope.

At the Monday night meeting, Berkley's City Council approved the construction project to repave the intersection of 12 Mile and Coolidge this summer.

The project is expected to begin June 15 and last roughly six weeks, closing down the intersection completely, though residents and patrons of nearby businesses will still need to reach the area.

The hope is that the project will present a freshly remodeled road in time for the Woodward Dream Cruise activities in Berkley in August, City Manager Jane Bais-DiSessa explained.

Following are details on the construction project to help you navigate through Berkley and the changes over the next couple of months. Patch will also keep you updated on new developments as they arise.

Scope of the project

Due to safety concerns about the existing brick lifting along the 12 Mile-Coolidge intersection, the area will be repaved with 10-inch non-reinforced concrete.

Hubbell, Roth & Clark Inc. of Bloomfield Hills will serve as the project engineer and Florence Cement Co. Inc. of Shelby Township as the contractor.

The current brick will be stripped before adding an asphalt binder course for strength and ultimately filled with stamped concrete. The end result will look just like the recently updated 11 Mile intersection, Bais-DiSessa said.

Pedestrian signals at the intersection will also be updated and because the city is embarking on a construction project, it must also update the sidewalks to meet the standards of accessibility outlined by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Berkley businesses open

Businesses surrounding the 12 Mile-Coolidge intersection include  at the southwest corner,  at the southeast and those in the northwest corner plaza, which includes , and . makes up the remaining northeast corner.

All of these businesses will be open and information sheets and construction signs will be placed to help patrons reach their destinations efficiently.

Navigating the intersection

Signs will be placed along roadways to explain that no through traffic will be allowed at the intersection, only local traffic.

To keep motorists from trying to cut through commercial parking lots, police officers will be stationed at the intersection if necessary.

Signs are also set to include businesses in all four corners of the intersection, noting that they are open.
