Cell Tower Outside Berkley Public Safety Building to be Removed

The work will take place Thursday, May 2, following the conclusion of a lease that had generated approximately $31,000 in revenue annually for the city.

The cell tower located outside the Berkley Public Safety building will be removed Thursday, May 2. Heavy equipment will be brought in by the cell tower owner to remove the flagpole and other equipment in order to decommission this cell site.

The work is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. when contractors will remove the flagpole along with the electrical supply. Municipal offices will be open during this time. City Hall, 45A District Court and Public Safety visitors are encouraged to use the parking lot on Rosemont on May 2.

Limited parking will be available in the parking lot on the north side of City Hall. Visitors will be able to enter the lot using the 12 Mile Road driveway. Parking spaces immediately in front of City Hall and the District Court will be blocked off from 7 a.m. until about 2 p.m.

Previously, the City of Berkley leased the cell site to a wireless carrier, generating about $31,000 in revenue for the city per year. The lease expired and, according to the agreement, the carrier is required to restore the site to its original condition.

“The bad news is that this removal represents lost revenue for the City of Berkley," City Manager Jane Bais-DiSessa said. "The good news is that the site will be cleared should another interested carrier chose this location in the future.”
