Berkley Council OKs Intersection Construction, Comcast Agreement and More

City officials approve tennis courts work, Comcast deal and EVIP participation.

12 Mile-Coolidge construction 

Among the biggest topics was approving . The project will begin by mid-month and will be wrapped up by the Woodward Dream Cruise in August, according to City Manager Jane Bais-DiSessa.

Businesses at the intersection, including and , will remain open during construction.

Tennis courts work

Other items addressed at the meeting included the resurfacing of the tennis court at . Council approved the project to be completed by Goddard Coatings for an amount just more than $35,100. According to Tom Colwell, director of , the project will begin as soon as possible and take around 10 days to complete.

Franchise agreement with Comcast

Council also authorized Bais-DiSessa to execute a Uniform Video Service Local Franchise Agreement between the city of Berkley and Comcast of the South Inc., a Colorado corporation doing business as Comcast.

Bais-DiSessa explained that the agreement helps streamline the processes for cable and Internet service to be offered to local businesses and residents, including the city channel, WBRK.

The city also receives 5 percent in franchise fees, which comes out to around $25,000, according to David Sabuda, city finance director.

SOCRRA and SOCWA appointments

Bais-DiSessa was also appointed as as Berkley’s representative to the Southeastern Oakland County Resource Recovery Authority (SOCRRA) Board of Trustees. Derrick Schueller, Public Works director, was also appointed as Berkley’s representative to the Southeastern Oakland County Water Authority (SOCWA) Board of Trustees.

Economic Vitality Incentive Program

Despite conflicting views among council members, the motion was carried to participate in the Economic Vitality Incentive Program (EVIP) through the grant awarded to the city of Pleasant Ridge for the evaluation of police, fire and EMS services and alternative service delivery options between the cities of Berkley, Huntington Woods and Pleasant Ridge.

Council member Steve Baker, for example, said he wished to have more time to mull over the data and its quality, as well as hear public input. Taking part in the program comes at no cost to the city, however, and members of the recommended the city’s participation.

The next Berkley City Council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. June 18 at .
