American Community Survey Provides a Snapshot of Berkley, Huntington Woods

A portrait of community life in Berkley and Huntington Woods in an up-to-date profile is available online.

The U.S. Census Bureau released the 2007-2011 results from the American Community Survey on Thursday. Information about Berkley and Huntington Woods is available through the American Fact Finder portal on the Census website.

The survey, which is conducted annually by the U.S. Census Bureau, provides current information about a community. The bureau intends for the results to guide policy decisions and funding allocations from state and local governments.

“By telling the story of our towns and neighborhoods, the American Community Survey helps planners locate schools and firehouses,” said Thomas Mesenbourg, the Census Bureau’s acting director in a press release. “Thanks to the cooperation of the public, the Census Bureau produces reliable, quality statistical information for even small communities in the U.S. That’s why it’s so important for households that are selected to participate in the ACS to respond.”

In Berkley:

• 27.5 percent of households have one or more people younger than 18 years.
• 20.3 percent of households have one or more people 65 years and older.
• 34.6 percent of residents live alone.
• 55.1 percent of male residents 15 years and older are married.
• 49.5 percent of female residents 15 years and older are married.
• 33.2 percent of residents are enrolled in college or graduate school.
• 43.5 percent of residents 25 years and older have a bachelor's degree or higher.
• 10.2 percent of residents 1 year and longer did not live in Berkley one year ago.
• 94.9 percent of residents were born in the United States.
• The median age of residents is 38.4.
• 86.3 percent of residents drive to work alone.
• The mean travel time to work is 20.6 minutes.
• 48.1 percent of civilian employed residents over 16 years work in management, business, science and art positions.
• 12.2 percent of civilian employed residents older than 16 years work in service positions.
• 4.8 percent of civilian employed residents older than 16 years are self-employed.
• 2.4 percent of households earn more than $200,000.

In Huntington Woods:

• 38.4 percent of households have one or more people younger than 18 years.
• 25.9 percent of households have one or more people 65 years and older.
• 17.5 percent of residents live alone.
• 72.5 percent of male residents 15 years and older are married.
• 65.6 percent of female residents 15 years and older are married.
• 13.4 percent of residents are enrolled in college or graduate school.
• 72.9 percent of residents 25 years and older have a bachelor's or higher.
• 4.6 percent of residents 1 year and longer did not live in Huntington Woods one year ago.
• 92.5 percent of residents were born in the United States.
• The median age of residents is 41.9.
• 86.8 percent of residents drive to work alone.
• The mean travel time to work is 21.3 minutes.
• 77 percent of civilian employed residents older than 16 years work in management, business, science and art positions.
• 4.2 percent of civilian employed residents older than 16 years work in service positions.
• 7.8 percent of civilian employed residents older than 16 years are self-employed.
• 19 percent of households earn more than $200,000.
