2 Vehicles Reported Stolen in Huntington Woods

The Public Safety Department urges residents to be alert and secure their property.

The Huntington Woods Public Safety Department on Monday urged residents to be alert and secure their property following the reported overnight thefts of two vehicles.

The reported thefts – which occurred between 9 p.m. Sunday and 7 a.m. Monday from one driveway on Wales – follow an increase in overnight thefts from vehicles during the past few weeks, Lt. Bill Cudney said.

"To have two of them stolen from the same driveway, it's very unusual," Cudney said.

He added that road construction throughout the neighborhood could be a contributing factor because more people who would normally park in their driveways are parking on the streets.

The incidents prompted the Huntington Woods Public Safety Department to post the following alert on its Facebook page Monday.

"There have been a number of recent overnight thefts from parked cars in the neighborhood between 10 Mile and 11 Mile and east of Coolidge," according to the post. "One person is in custody following such incidents last night that included the theft of 2 cars. We believe others were involved and the cars have not been recovered. We have greatly increased patrols in this area but need your help. Please lock cars, close garage doors and call police immediately if you see or hear anything suspicious."

Cudney said locked doors are the biggest deterrent to would-be thieves and urged residents not to leave purses, wallets, iPads, laptops and other valuables in their vehicles.

"Call us if you see anything unusual," Cudney said. "People walk their dogs and ride their bikes, sometimes pretty late."

He asked residents to be alert for people lingering next to vehicles or returning to a vehicle multiple times and report such behavior if they see it.

Cudney said he could not release further information because the case remains under investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Huntington Woods Public Safety Department at 248-541-1180.
