Truck Stolen from Berkley, Recovered in Detroit

Public Safety Department investigating theft reported Tuesday.

The is investigating a vehicle theft that was reported Tuesday involving a truck reported stolen from the 4200 block of Thomas Avenue and later recovered in Detroit, the department said.

The victim reported his outside sensor light was on at 5 a.m., but that he didn't think anything of it. He said he didn't hear the truck's diesel engine overnight and speculated whomever took it may have pushed it out of the driveway. The victim said he couldn't remember whether he locked the vehicle.

"It was recovered in the city of Detroit," Berkley Sgt. Mike Crum said Tuesday. "It was running, the ignition was punched and the license plate was gone. Basically, they were joyriding in it.

"Right now, we don't have any suspects. But tomorrow, we'll go through it for fingerprints and hair."

Crum urged residents to keep an eye on their neighborhood. Whether you live in Berkley, Huntington Woods, Oak Park or Pleasant Ridge, "you know who belongs there, whose car belongs there," he said.

"You know better than us what is suspicious. So we ask that you call us. That's the first priority – to answer the call of our residents," Crum said. "They don't want to bug us, but we would rather be called 100 times for false alarms than miss one opportunity to stop a crime."

He also reminded residents that criminals are looking for "crimes of opportunity" and urged people to keep their vehicles, garages and doors locked.
