Tree Toppled By High Winds Falls on Car in Berkley

The driver was uninjured in the incident at Griffith and 12 Mile Road.

Gusting winds toppled a large tree, which fell on top of a car, Wednesday night near the corner of Griffith and 12 Mile Road in Berkley.

Fortunately, the driver was unharmed, Deputy Director Robert North said. employees were called in from home to remove the tree, he said.

Witness Kate Rotan of Huntington Woods, who spoke with the driver on the scene, told Berkley Patch that the woman said she was waiting at a red light when the tree fell on her car.

North said no other trees were reported downed in the city, but many power lines were "arcing and sparking."

DTE Energy reported that 26 customers in Berkley were without power Wednesday night. Only one customer in Huntington Woods was without power, DTE reported on its outage website.

A wind advisory is in effect until 11 p.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, with gusts up to 50 m.p.h. possible.
