Tree Crashes Down on Vehicles; No One Hurt

Huntington Woods clears 'huge' oak that fell during Wednesday evening's storm.

In a "freaky, fluke" occurrence, a seemingly healthy oak tree in Huntington Woods snapped during Wednesday evening's storm and crashed on two occupied vehicles, officials said today.

This morning all that was left to indicate what happened at the corner of Nadine and York was a fresh stump and the scent of sawed wood in the air.

"We had a huge tree down last night," Claire Galed of the confirmed.

She said the tree was blown down by the wind appeared healthy from the outside.

"It was just one of those freaky, fluke things that happen," she said.

The DPW and sprang into action Wednesday evening to clear the tree and vehicles, which were blocking the path of the Motor City Striders Fun Run.

Two cars – a Ford with one passenger and a GMC with two passengers – were damaged, Public Safety Lt. Billy Spencer said. No one was injured.

The DPW received a few calls Thursday morning of hanging branches, "but nothing Earth-shattering," Galed said. DTE Energy's outage map indicated three customers in Huntington Woods were without power.

In Berkley, DTE's website indicated 185 consumers had lost power. The did not receive any reports of downed trees or power lines Thursday morning.

More thunderstorms are in the forecast today, according to the National Weather Service.
