Police Blotter: Man Smashes Berkley Front Window, Woman Steals Cookies at Westborn and More

Man smashes window at Berkley Front

The Berkley Public Safety Department responded to a 911 call about a man pounding on the doors at the and refusing to leave at 2:40 a.m. July 29, according to a report.

Witnesses who work at the Berkley Front told the reporting officer they were closing after last call and the suspect began yelling expletives as he was led out of the bar and then began banging on the side door. The witnesses said they told the man the bar was closed and that if he didn't leave, they would call police, at which point he went to the rear door and smashed the window, prompting one of the witnesses to call 911, according to the report.

The reporting officer said that, upon his arrival, he observed a man running behind Spectrum Photo, with two people behind The Berkley Front following him. The man jumped a fence at a home in the 3300 block of Griffith and the officer ordered him to stop, according to the report. The man attempted to climb another fence and was again told to stop, an order he disobeyed, the officer wrote. The officer pulled the man off the fence and instructed him to get on the ground, which he refused to do, according to the report. The officer wrote that he then grabbed the man by the arm, took him to the ground and took him into custody after a struggle. The man had a glass pint of Bacardi rum in his left front pocket, with which he had smashed the bar's rear door window, according to the report. Unknown prescription pills also were found in his left rear pocket, the officer wrote.

The man had cuts on his hands and told the officer he had anxiety issues and began to hyperventilate, the report states. Alliance Mobile Health was called to treat the man's medical issues and he was transported to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, the officer wrote.

The man was issued citations and given a Tuesday court date.

Woman steals cookies at Westborn Market

An officer was dispatched to in Berkley at 4:16 p.m. July 31 after employees reported an older woman wearing a white dress and white hat had taken items from the store without paying, according to a report.

The reporting officer wrote that an employee observed the suspect put two packages of cookies in her purse, go to the register and pay for other items, and then leave the store without paying for the cookies, at which point she was stopped by employees.

The stolen items totaled $7, according to the report.

The woman was arrested and give an Aug. 14 court date, the officer wrote.

Home entry attempted

A report was filed at 1:01 p.m. July 30 stating that a basement egress window in a home on the 1990 block of Phillips appeared to have been tampered with.

The reporting officer said there were two tear marks in the window screen consistent with someone attempting to gain entry; however, the window was locked and no entry was observed. A small print was detected, but an attempt to lift it was unsuccessful, according to the report.
