Police Blotter: Intoxicated Motorcyclist Crashes; Bike, AC Unit Stolen

The following are highlights from reports from the Berkley and Huntington Woods Public Safety Departments since July 22:

Air-conditioning unit stolen in Berkley

The owner of  on Eleven Mile Road in Berkley reported at 5:30 p.m. July 24 that a window air-conditioning unit was taken from his business. The man said he noticed the unit had been removed when he went to go home for the day, according to a  report. The responding officer observed an open window in the cinder block wall where the unit used to be, as well as two wooden strips in a trash can below the window that had been removed to gain access to the window. There are no suspects, according to the officer's report.

Intoxicated motorcyclist crashes

Berkley Public Safety officers responded to a single-vehicle crash at 2:22 a.m. July 23 at the corner of Woodward Avenue and Wiltshire. The reporting officer said that when he arrived on the scene, he observed a 1983 Kawasaki motorcycle parked in the middle of the street with fluid and debris on the ground nearby and the driver leaning on a BPS patrol car with scrapes on his arm. Alliance Mobile Health responded to treat the man's injuries, according to the BPS officer's report.

The driver smelled of intoxicants and told the officer he was driving home to Southfield from Ye Olde Saloon in Royal Oak after drinking three pints of beer and a shot of whiskey starting at 11:30 p.m. July 22, according to the report. The driver performed poorly on sobriety tests and registered a .148 blood alcohol content on his preliminary breath test, the officer reported. The drunken driving standard in Michigan is .08.

A records check revealed the driver had a previous alcohol offense, the motorcycle's plate belonged on a 1971 Honda and the driver had no motorcycle endorsement, according to the report. The driver was arrested, his vehicle impounded and his plate confiscated and destroyed, the report said.

The driver was held until 1 p.m., released on $250 bond given a July 31 court date, according to the report.

Bike, helmet stolen in Huntington Woods

A resident reported that sometime between 1 and 3 p.m. July 22, a black Diamondback mountain bike with an extra wide seat and a dark blue Schwinn helmet were taken from the side of her garage on Lincoln Avenue. The resident told the that the items are worth $275.
