Police Blotter: Handgun, GPS Units Reported Stolen

An officer arrested a motorist who turned into oncoming traffic and issued an OWI citation.

Public Safety officials in Berkley and Huntington Woods have tackled a variety of reports during the past week, including the following.

Coins, GPS unit taken from unlocked vehicle

A resident in the 1800 block of Beverly in Berkley reported that between 8 p.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. Wednesday, two coin purses and a TomTom GPS unit were taken from vehicles left unlocked in the driveway, police said.

IPod, Magellan GPS unit taken from vehicle in driveway

Sometime between 11:30 p.m. Monday and 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, an Apple iPod and Magellan GPS unit were taken from a vehicle parked in the driveway in the 2300 block of Cummings in Berkley, a resident reported. The resident said she wasn't sure whether the vehicle was locked and that it appeared the center console had been gone through as well, according to a police report. The report stated there were no pry or tear marks on the weather stripping to indicate that the car was unlocked by the suspect.

Loaded handgun reported stolen

A resident in the 1100 block of Catalpa in Berkley reported that a loaded handgun was taken from the center console of his car between 8 a.m.-11 p.m. Monday. The man said he went to work that day at the U.S. Army Reserve Center in Southfield and ran errands. He didn't discover his gun was missing until he went to retrieve it at 11 p.m. It is unclear when and where the weapon was taken. The man said the car's passenger side door does not lock well.

Laptop taken while resident packed

A resident in the 2900 block of Royal in Berkley reported that sometime after noon Saturday, a laptop was taken from a vehicle left open and unattended in the driveway as he packed to go out of town. There are no suspects.

Motorist turns into oncoming traffic, receives OWI citation

A officer reported arresting a motorist at 2:35 a.m. Saturday after the driver turned into oncoming traffic on 10 Mile Road during a traffic stop. The officer reported the vehicle was traveling south on Woodward Avenue with no lights on, weaving in and out of its lane and braking erratically, prompting the officer to activate his emergency lights and initiate a stop.

The driver failed initial sobriety tests and declined a preliminary breath test, instead walking back to her car and ignoring the officer's instructions to stop, at which point she was arrested, the officer reported. A warrant was issued for blood work, and the driver was held at the before posting $100 cash bond. The driver received citations for operating while intoxicated, preliminary breath test refusal and improper light use and was issued a court date, according to the report.
