Police Blotter: Drunken Drivers Arrested in Berkley and Huntington Woods

The following information was supplied by the Huntington Woods and Berkley public safety departments. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

These were incidents handled in the past week by the Huntington Woods and Berkley Public Safety Departments:

Drunken drivers arrested in Huntington Woods

April 14: Police pulled over a driver on eastbound I-696 near Campbell at 1:59 a.m. after the motorist nearly struck another vehicle while straddling the broken line markers on the freeway. According to the arresting officer’s report, the driver was red-eyed and told the officer, “I’m drunk,” once he was stopped. The driver failed the field tests and registered a blood alcohol level of .22 – nearly three times Michigan’s legal limit of .08. The driver was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. He was held at the for a warrant confirmation and was later released per the Redford Police Department.

April 14: Police pulled over a driver heading south on Woodward at 10 Mile around 4:20 a.m. after the officer’s radar indicated the motorist was traveling 53 mph. The officer reported that the car was making repeated lane changes without signaling and that intoxication was suspected once the traffic stop was made. The driver failed the sobriety tests, despite attempting each one multiple times, and the arresting officer reporter that she was very “emotional.” The driver agreed to take a breath test after initially refusing, and registered a blood alcohol level of .18. Her records indicated a suspended license. She was arrested and temporarily held at the Huntington Woods Department of Public Safety. The driver was issued a citation for operating while intoxicated, driving while license suspended, and no proof of insurance, and issued a court date, according to the report.

Teens arrested for drunken driving and illegal possession in Berkley

April 14: Police pulled over a driver traveling west on 11 Mile around 2:22 a.m. for swerving through lanes and accelerating through a red light at the Coolidge intersection. According to the report, the driver and passenger, who are both 17, smelled of intoxicants during the traffic stop. The driver also had cigarette ash on her leg. She told the officer she had a valid driver’s license, but not with her, the report explained. The driver failed the field test and registered a blood alcohol level of .13. She was held at the Berkley Public Safety Department and issued a citation for operating while intoxicated, violation of her graduated driver’s license, and disobeying a traffic control device. The driver was given a $250 bond and a court date.  The passenger registered a blood alcohol level of .13 and told the officer the cigarettes were hers. She was also held at the , issued a citation for minor in possession for alcohol and tobacco, and given a $250 bond and court date. Parents of both teens were notified.

Drunken driver arrested after driving down Coolidge without lights

April 15: Around 2:28 a.m. police officer observed a driver at Coolidge and Wiltshire driving without his lights on and between lanes. According to the arresting officer’s report, the driver reached speeds of 40 mph down Coolidge and then abruptly turned east onto Beverly when the officer initiated emergency lights. The driver did not stop and continued eastbound until striking a curb approximately 100 yards up. The officer reported strong suspicions that the driver was intoxicated once stopped. The driver failed sobriety tests and was uncooperative, the report said. He registered a blood alcohol level of .22 and was held at the Berkley Department of Public Safety with a $250 bond. He was issued a citation for operating while intoxicated, driving without lights on, and speeding, and given a court date.
