Police Blotter: BMW Stolen, Driver Flees Traffic Stop and More

The following information was supplied by the Berkley and Huntington Woods public safety departments. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Public Safety officials in Berkley and Huntington Woods have been busy with a variety of reports since Nov. 10, including the following.

BMW stolen from Berkley driveway

A resident called 911 to report that a metallic brown/tan, four-door 2012 BMW 528i with a New Jersey license plate was stolen from his driveway in the 1200 block of Harvard in Berkley between 7:05-7:09 a.m. Friday. The resident reported that he left the vehicle, which was being used by his employer, in his driveway to warm up while he went back inside the house to get a child car seat. When he returned, the vehicle was gone, the resident said. There was no known suspect.

Driver flees Berkley officer during traffic stop

A officer reported that at 11:18 p.m. Nov. 10 he observed a silver SUV swerving in and out of its lane as it traveled north on Woodward Avenue from 12 Mile Road.

The vehicle veered to pass traffic taking off from a green light at Webster, prompting the officer to activate his emergency lights. The driver did not respond, according the the report, so the officer shined his spotlight into the driver's side mirror to get the man's attention. The vehicle maintained its speed of 45 mph in a 45 mph zone for four more blocks before the officer activated his siren, the report said. The BPS officer reported that the vehicle continued for two more blocks before pulling over in the right turn lane of Coolidge Highway.

As the officer approached the vehicle, the driver took off from the traffic stop and sped north on Woodward, the report said. The officer said he ran back to his vehicle and pursued the driver with lights and sirens activated before the suspect pulled over approximately three blocks down the road. The officer said he used his public address system to order the man to turn off the vehicle and instructed him to remain seated when the driver attempted to get out. Back-up units were called to assist, according to the report.

The officer reported a "strong odor of intoxicants" as he approached the open driver's side window and that the driver's eyes were "red and watery." The driver made an "uncoordinated" movement with his phone and was ordered to put it down, according to the report. The officer then asked the driver to exit the vehicle to perform sobriety tests, on which he "performed poorly," according to the report. The man submitted to a preliminary breath test with a result of .16 blood alcohol content, twice the legal limit of .08 in Michigan. The man told the officer he had had "maybe two drinks."

According to the report, two bags of marijuana were found in the vehicle's console. The man was taken into custody and held on suspicion of operating while intoxicated and suspended license, fleeing police and violation of the Controlled Substances Act. A subsequent check revealed the suspect had two prior operating while intoxicated convictions and one prior suspended license conviction, according to the report. The suspect told the reporting officer that he has a problem with substance abuse and wants to change, according to the report.

The case was forwarded to the Oakland County Prosecutor's office for formal charges, the report said.

Bike missing from Huntington Woods garage

A Huntington Woods resident reported at 1:04 p.m. Nov. 12 that a bike was missing from his garage in the 12700 block of LaSalle. The man said he last remembered seeing the bike two weeks prior and was not sure whether the garage had been left open or unlocked during that period. There was no known suspect.

DEA, medical licenses stolen from vehicle at O'Mara's

A Bloomfield man reported that property was taken from his GMC Terrain sometime between 6:30 and 10 p.m. Nov. 11 in the parking lot of  in Berkley. While he ate dinner with friends, a briefcase containing a Drug Enforcement Administration license, Michigan medical license, pharmacy license and personal checkbook was taken, he told police. The man said he was unsure whether the vehicle was locked but that it showed no signs of forced entry. There was no known suspect.

Wallet taken from vehicle in Berkley driveway

A woman reported that her brown leather wallet was taken from her vehicle sometime between 5 p.m. Nov. 10 and 6 a.m. Nov. 11 while it was parked in a driveway in the 1700 block of Harvard in Berkley. The woman said she was unsure whether the doors were locked, but there were no signs of forced entry into the vehicle. The wallet contained a driver's license, Social Security card, two debit cards, a Kohl's credit card and approximately $4. There was no known suspect.
