UPDATED Photos: Lids for Kids Offers Fun and Safety for Children

The annual bike safety event at the Berkley Public Safety Department was the biggest one to date.

Berkley's annual Lids for Kids event Saturday featured free bike helmets and safety lessons, a bounce house, a rock-climbing wall, crafts, refreshments and lots of fun for families.  

The event, held at the just down 12 Mile Road from the , was well attended. Fundraisers throughout the year, including , made Lids for Kids possible.

"Lids for Kids was the biggest ever!" BPS Sgt. Mike Crum e-mailed Berkley Patch on Monday after the official count was tallied. He said 400 bike helmets, 325 certificates and 350 T-shirts were provided at no expense to the community.

The event also featured a Public Safety officer dunk tank, where children lined up for a chance to soak a City of Berkley Public Safety officer.  

Vanessa Yamin of Berkley giggled as she dunked a good-natured Officer Dave Arney, who had many visits into the water during his stint in the tank Saturday.
