UPDATED: Suspect Dead, Officer Hospitalized After Shooting at Southfield Police Department

The motive behind the incident was unknown as of Sunday night.

A man who opened fire Sunday afternoon inside the Southfield Police Department has died and an officer who was shot during the incident was hospitalized, according to reports.

A 64-year-old man entered the station and, after ignoring a query from the front desk clerk, took out his gun and pulled the trigger, WXYZ reports. However, it did not fire and the clerk pulled his weapon as other officers entered the lobby and ordered the man to drop his gun, the television station reports.

The man did not comply and, instead, exchanged fire with the officers, wounding a 25-year veteran of the force in the shoulder, WXYZ reports.
