Ferndale physician Dr. Joel Milliner will be sentenced July 9 after he pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges that he wrote illegal narcotics prescriptions. He could spend up to 20 years in prison.
Milliner made his plea before U.S. District Judge Gerald E. Rosen in Detroit, the Detroit Free Press reports.
U.S. Attorney Barbara L. McQuade said in a statement that the prescriptions included Opana, Oxycontin and Roxicodone that Milliner knew would be used illegally. The doctor also admitted that he knew the individuals receiving the unnecessary prescriptions would be reimbursed by Medicare.
"Diversion of prescription drugs causes significant harm,” McQuade said. “The number of fatal overdoses from prescription drugs in the United States last year was more than six times the number of fatal overdoses from all other illegal drugs combined."
