UPDATED: Huntington Woods Bank Robbery Suspect Charged

John Jones, 47, of Royal Oak Township is being held in the Oakland County Jail without bond.

The suspect in a robbery last week at Chase Bank in Huntington Woods was arraigned Wednesday.

The man is being held in the Oakland County Jail without bond, Huntington Woods Public Safety Director Steve Fairman said.

John Jones of Royal Oak Township was charged in 45th District Court in Oak Park via video arraignment from the jail, The Daily Tribune reported. Judge David Gubow ordered Jones jailed without bond, according to the report.

The 47-year-old, who was shot Sept. 10 in Pleasant Ridge after fleeing the robbery scene, was released from Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak and turned over to the jail Monday, Huntington Woods Public Safety Deputy Director Nick Armold told The Daily Tribune.

Jones was being held on a parole violation stemming from a previous armed robbery conviction and was to be arraigned on a two-count felony warrant for bank robbery and fleeing and eluding, Huntington Woods Public Safety Lt. Ron Livingston said last week.

A Huntington Woods resident was in the bank parking lot Sept. 10 when he noticed a man wearing a knit cap and white gloves go into the building, Livingston said.

"It looked really hinky because it was a nice day," he said.

The resident decided to wait and see what happened and, a short time later, he observed Jones exit the bank carrying bundled money, with bills blowing away in the breeze, Livingston said.

The Huntington Woods resident followed Jones through the parking lot to his car and called 911 to provide a description of the man and vehicle.

By the time Jones had made it as far southbound on Woodward Avenue as Lincoln, the Huntington Woods Public Safety Department had caught up with him and he fled into Pleasant Ridge, Livingston said.

"There was a short pursuit, and the suspect fled and was pursued on foot by Royal Oak and Huntington Woods police officers," Royal Oak Interim Police Chief Corrigan O'Donohue said last week.

Jones was shot in a driveway on Oxford Boulevard, according to O'Donohue.

Jones was shot by a Royal Oak Police officer and a Huntington Woods Public Safety officer and both are on paid administrative leave while the Oakland County Sheriff’s department investigates, according to The Daily Tribune.

It is standard practice for an outside agency to investigate Public Safety shootings for transparency's sake, Livingston said.
