UPDATE, 11:40 a.m.: The sinkhole that nearly swallowed 11 Mile Road was caused by a water main break, according to Greg Rassel, director of DPS.

"We think it's where two connections came together," Rassel said.

The sidewalk and eastbound lanes near Pleasant Street remain closed for now. Rassel said he expects all lanes of 11 Mile to be open later this evening.

"It will be bumpy, but the road will be open," Rassel said. "We're used to this."

The road most likely will be repaired with a cold patch until spring gets here, if it ever gets here, Rassel said.

10:55 a.m: The sinkhole on 11 Mile Road was reported at approximately 7:30 a.m. A few vehicles were damaged driving over it, said Royal Oak Police Chief Corrigan O’Donohue. No one was hurt.

Crews from the Royal Oak Department of Public Service are on the scene. The cause is under investigation. No further information is available at this time.

10:20 a.m: Royal Oak police are reporting a sinkhole on 11 Mile Road near Pleasant.

All eastbound traffic has been diverted to the westbound lane.

The sinkhole encompasses the entire eastbound lane, and part of the west, police said.

Stick with Patch for this developing story.

I was on a bus when we hit that hole. The bus jumped hard and we nearly tipped over! The bus and another car stopped and pulled over. The bus driver and another car called and reported it , I believe. I asked to geet off the bus and walked the rest of the block to Main St. sigh! Scared the heck outta me. Everyone was okay and not hurt.
