Bicycle, Huntington Woods Public Safety Cruiser Crash 'a Traffic Accident,' Official Says

The officer who was driving is back at work while Berkley studies who was at fault in the Tuesday night incident.

A crash Tuesday night between a cruiser and a bicyclist in Berkley remains under investigation, Lt. Ron Livingston said Friday.

Livingston said the crash occurred just before 10 p.m. at the intersection of Catalpa and Bacon as a Huntington Woods officer returned from refueling his vehicle at a depot shared with Berkley. 

The injured bicyclist was taken to an area hospital Tuesday night and was listed in fair condition Thursday, Livingston said.

The officer was on his way to assist in an arrest, Livingston said. The call was not an emergency and the officer did not have his siren and lights activated, Livingston said.

Deputy Director Robert North confirmed Thursday that the was conducting an investigation.

Meanwhile, the Huntington Woods officer remains on duty.

"It was a traffic accident," Livingston said. "There's no criminal investigation."

Livingston said the process would be the same if the crash had involved a resident: A report would be made and insurance companies would be contacted.

The investigation will determine whether the officer was "doing what he was supposed to and whether he was driving safely," as well as "look at what the bicyclist was doing," Livingston said.

He added that the rules of the road for bicyclists are the same as for motorists: Bikes are required to stop or yield at signs and lights just as motor vehicles are.
