Berkley Honors Retired Public Safety Sergeant

"I have no regrets at all. I enjoyed it immensely," said Tom Dzendzel of his 25-year career with the city, which was recognized in a resolution passed Monday.

The Berkley City Council on Monday honored Sgt. Tom Dzendzel, who retired from the Public Safety Department on May 1, after 25 years of service.

A resolution passed on his behalf noted that Dzendzel completed classes at Oakland Community College and Oakland University; had a plethora of special training and technical expertise; and earned recognitions including Distinguished Service Award.

"While serving ... in the Berkley Public Safety Department, Tom had a keen sense of humor and laid back personality," the resolution states. "He is known for his fairness and ability to communicate with people and was beyond helpful and willing to learn or help teach any new task."

In his free time, Dzendzel enjoys spending time with his wife and children, as well as fishing, golfing and hosting back-yard parties with friends and neighbors, according to the resolution.

"I have no regrets at all," Dzendzel said. "I enjoyed it immensely."

BPS Director Richard Eshman said Thursday the department's budget and staff count will remain the same in the wake of Dzendzel's departure, with the following changes taking place.

  • Scott Smith, who had worked on a contract basis was sworn as a BPS officer July 13 and began training at the Police Academy.
  • A sergeants exam will be held Sept. 24 and, based on results, an officer will be promoted to fill Dzendzel's role, which included a shift supervisor function.
  • The open contractor position will be filled within two weeks.

"We were glad to have you," Mayor Phil O'Dwyer told Dzendzel during the council meeting. "You set a very high standard in this town."
