Accident That Shut 12 Mile, Coolidge Intersection Under Investigation

A man was hospitalized and released after a single-vehicle crash Saturday that sheered off a utility pole at the corner, according to the Berkley Public Safety Department.

The  Berkley Public Safety Department is investigating an accident that forced the closure of the 12 Mile Road and Coolidge Highway intersection for several hours Saturday.

A man who was driving southbound on Coolidge Highway at 4:30 p.m. was involved in a single-vehicle crash in which he struck a utility pole near the intersection's northwest corner, according to BPS Detective Sgt. Mike Crum.

"The electric pole was sheered off and we were afraid it was going to fall into Coolidge," and could cause death or serious injury to people in the area, he said.

The corner was closed for several hours while DTE Energy shut off power and installed a new utility pole, according to Crum.

The driver was hospitalized and released after the accident, Crum said.

He said the Berkley Public Safety Department is awaiting the results of blood work sent to the Michigan State Police lab to determine whether charges are warranted, Crum said.

thanks for checking on this.
I cannot understand for the life of me how that guy went off the road with such force (and we all know well the speed limit on Coolidge is 30!) that he broke the light pole.
