Let’s see if I have this straight. A couple of truly misguided Oakland County Democrats, the party chairman and the guy who wants Brooks job, have decided they can’t best Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson on the issues, so they’ve decided to attack him on the near fatal injuries he suffered in a car crash seven weeks ago.
What a truly brilliant Machiavellian campaign strategy. The Democratic candidate for County Executive has even challenged Brooks to a debate. Sure, why not? Maybe you can squeeze one in between his rehab sessions, or frankly you might stand a better chance if you debated Brooks while he was asleep. Even then, I fear, you would be outmatched.
I’m not painting all Democrats with the same brush stroke. I know most people, regardless of political persuasion, wish Brooks well and hope for his speedy recovery. But here’s a suggestion. In the future, as a party, you might want to be more circumspect about those you choose to lead and run for public office.
These two representatives of the Oakland County Democratic Party have chosen to descend into the muck, mire and stench of political gutter politics in the hope of achieving victory in November. Their sleazy and transparent tactics bring shame and embarrassment, not only to themselves, but to their party. And even Democrats deserve to be better served.
Politics is a rough and tumble game, no doubt about it. But even in politics there is such a thing as common decency and respect, but apparently these two guys were absent the day those particular character traits were handed out.
But come election day, Messrs. Howley and Houston may experience first hand for themselves what it’s like to be severely injured in a head-on collision when the voters of Oakland County, Republican, Democratic, Independents, have their say on Nov. 6.
