Scholarship Essays Can Help Pay for College

This week, most high school seniors made their final choices for school next fall. Where are you going to college? How will you pay for it?

By now, many students have secured merit and other scholarships to help foot the bill. But don’t worry if you haven’t figured out how to pay for school yet. There’s still money out there.

Here are a few of Wow’s latest finds:

• The Big Dig Scholarship: Write about an item relatives might find 200 years from now in your backyard for a chance to win $3,000. Deadline: June 1
• Independence Day Contest: Answer the prompt, “I Declare! What it took to declare our independence” for $250, $500 or $5,000. Deadline: July 2
• Get This Party Started Scholarship: Submit a creative new graduation party idea in 100 words or less for a chance to win one of two $500 college scholarships. Deadline: May 15
• Bruce Lee Foundation Scholarship: Write about a personal experience that exemplifies one of the martial arts legend’s philosophical principles for a chance to win a $1,000 scholarship. Deadline: June 15

For more scholarship opportunities, check out your school’s counseling office.  Then take a look at scholarship websites such as Fastweb, ScholarPro, Zinch and Cappex. Fill out the profile information as completely as possible so you’ll get the most matches. Check Wow’s Facebook page for scholarship opportunities as well.
