How Much Does a College Essay Topic Matter

A college essay is never really about an experience, an influential person or a meaningful book. It's about YOU, a college-bound high school student.

Last week at the Frankel Jewish Academy in West Bloomfield, a high school junior  wrote a college essay about learning to mow the lawn.  Another described dinner with her family, followed by a night out with a friend.

One student talked about watching the space shuttle launch from a Florida beach; another described finding her way through the airport alone, promising herself a donut if she stayed calm.

They all focus on great topics that allowed the writers to share something genuine about themselves; you have a great story to share with college admissions officers.

Wow spent the past three weeks at the Frankel Jewish Academy, where we were invited to guide the junior class through the 10-step Wow method. We enjoyed working with the teachers and counseling staff, and we loved watching the students' stories and beautiful writing voices emerge.
