What's Closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The United States honors slain civil rights leader with a federal holiday Monday.

The nation pays tribute Monday to the life and work of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

The federal holiday celebrates the legacy of King, who urged nonviolent resistance as a means to protest racial injustice. Many schools and offices will close to mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day, including:

  • Many banks and credit unions

In addition, there will be no regular mail delivery Monday. State offices also will be closed.

However, the will be open, and trash and recycling collection will maintain its regular schedule in Berkley and Huntington Woods.

King was assassinated in 1968 in Memphis, TN, and would have turned 82 on Jan. 15. The 1964 Nobel Peace Prize winner delivered an early version of his I Have a Dream speech during a 1963 rally in Detroit.

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character," he said later that year during his famous speech in Washington, D.C.
