Weekend Planner: What Will You Do With Your Extra Hour?

We have some ideas: Check out the Berkley Rotary Club Pancake Breakfast, Friends of the Library book sale, June Moon's grand opening, Shop for a Cause event in Huntington Woods or the Ferndale Film Festival.

Hey folks, don't forget to turn those clocks back for daylight saving time Sunday. You may need the extra hour to sleep in after a fun, exciting weekend.

From the Ferndale Film Festival, to local charity events, here are some ways to take advantage of 60 more minutes:

  • Where: Blumz By JR Designs and the Ferndale Public Library
  • When: 1 p.m. at the library, 7 p.m. at Blumz on Friday
  • Cost: $5 (free at library)
  • Why go: Check out the festival's full lineup of films at the library's or during the Blumz evening showing.
  • What else: Visit www.ferndalefilmfestival.org to get the full list of films, times and venues planned for the festival, which continues through Sunday.


  • Where:
  • When: 7:30 a.m. to noon Saturday
  • Cost: $5 for adults; $2 for children
  • Why go: Enjoy all-you-can eat pancakes, sausage, bagels, juice and coffee served with a smile to support the Rotary Club's charitable efforts. "The Pancake Breakfast is the Berkley Rotary Club's major fundraiser," Berkley Public Library Director Celia Morse wrote in an e-mail to Berkley Patch. "Rotary International is the world's oldest and largest service organization and sponsors international programs including clean water projects and polio eradication as well as thousands of local projects. The Berkley Rotary Club sponsors high school exchange students, offers scholarships to graduates, and assists with many community projects including and the Berkley Public Library." 
  • What else: Visit the Rotary Club's website for more information. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the or at the door.

  • When: 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday
  • Where:
  • Why Go: Get ready to grab your reusable shopping bags and load up. Shoppers will be able to take home fiction and nonfiction titles. Proceeds benefit the library.
  • Cost: Hardcovers will be available for $1 and paperbacks will sell for 50 cents, or three for $1.

  • Where: June Moon, 2743 Coolidge Highway, Berkley
  • When: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday
  • Cost: Free
  • Why go: "Come in and introduce yourselves," . "I just want to meet everybody. Welcome me to the neighborhood." A ribbon-cutting ceremony with Mayor Marilyn Stephan will be held at 11 a.m.
  • What else: Visit June Moon's website for more information about the store's merchandise.


  • Where: Start at 10844 Lincoln Dr., Huntington Woods, where you can pick up a map of homes on the Shop for a Cause route.
  • When: Noon to 4 p.m. Sunday
  • Cost: Free
  • Why go: Ten percent of sales during the Huntington Woods Women's League's seventh annual progressive shopping event will benefit women's and children's charities and community projects. Refreshments, handmade goods, household items, women's and children's accessories and more will be for sale.
  • What else: Download a map of homes on the Shop for a Cause route in advance at hwwl.org or visit the Huntington Woods Women's League on Facebook for more information.
